Miss Cosmos - Events - 2007 - Miss Universe

The build up to Miss Universe 2007 began at the beginning of May as the constants arrived in the host city of Mexico. As with previous years the days leading up the final competition were spent on publicity work, pre recording segments of the show and a preliminary competition to see who would take to the stage in the final.

The final competition was aired around the world on Monday 28th May 2007. The show was presented by Vanessa Minnillo and Mario Lopez.

On the night it was Miss Universe Japan Riyo Mori who impressed judges the most.

Controversies
The final show went fairly smoothly though there were a few small hiccups which are perhaps expected given the live nature of the final competition and the sheer number of contestants on stage for large segments of the show.

Rachel Smith stumbled during the evening gown parade having being chosen as a finalist after the swimming costume parade. She recovered quickly however it appeared to end her changes for taking the Miss Universe crown.

There was further problems for Rachel Smith as the crowed booed and jeered during as she answered her question having made the final five. Rachel appeared to struggle as the negative response continued. The booing lessened as her answer drew to a close. She finished by thanking the crowed in Spanish which seemed to return normality to the event. The reason behind the cold response seems likely to be Rachel Smith making it to the final stage of the competition, beating other contestants such as Miss Universe Mexico 2007 Rosa Maria Ojeda. It is possible that the actions of the crowed were more to do with political problems between the two nations, however Rachel Smith was well received during her performances on stage prior to her mistake and final selection.

As Miss Universe 2006 Zuleyka Rivera was crowning Riyo Mori the $250,000 fell from her grasp. It was caught before it hit the floor though and the moment was not caught clearly on the live feed from the show.

Results
A more detailed breakdown of contestants scores were released during the show. For each contestant in the evening and swim wear categories a mark out of ten was displayed on the screen to show how the judges scored each contestant.
